Miantonomi Park is a 32 acres parcel purchased in 1637 from Chief Sachems. Colonial settlers used the hill for a lookout, public executions and beacons. At one time there was a fort on Tomony Hill. After the Revolutionary War the entire area around Miantonomi Hill reverted to farm land until 1921. In 1921 the City of Newport purchased the site for a park. In 1929 the tower was erected to honor those that fought in WWI.
