Florence sits on the south bank of the Gila River. Located to the north are the gold and silver mines of Superior, to the south, the City of Tucson. Until the Gadsen Purchase of 1853, land south of the Gila was part of Mexico. Florence was established in 1866 as settlers moved on to the rich river bottom farm land and it quickly became a trading center, provider of supplies to the army and the mines to the north. The Townsite Historic District includes buildings extant from the town first boom with commercial buildings, churches and houses still serving their original purpose. The town remains the county seat for Pinal County and is home to a number of public and private prisons.
