In December of 2007, the Town Council of Kure Beach purchased property on Atlantic Avenue across the street from the ocean to be used as a public park to preserve, in perpetuity, public green space on the Atlantic Ocean. The property is located in the heart of the downtown area between K and L Avenues near the Kure Beach Fishing Pier.
In 2008, The Town Council formed a committee to develop a design concept for the park. The final design included a pavilion to be open on three sides with a stage to be used for concerts and educational events. It also included a public restroom, a walking path, a play area for small children, benches, swings, rain gardens and a storm water infiltration system.
Plans called for the existing boardwalk from K to L Avenues to be replaced and for one of the existing accesses to be compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act. Plans included wooden bump outs with bench swings facing the ocean along the boardwalk and repaving of Atlantic Avenue from K to L Avenues.
