The grave of Officer Michael J. Schiavina is marked by a 5' tall polished black granite marker. The front of the marker has the images of a pair of Latin crosses, the emblem of the Springfield, MA Police Department, a Springfield police badge number 315 and the inscription:

The back of the marker has the laser etched image of a race car and crossed racing flags and the inscription:

At 7:50 p.m. on the night of November 12, 1985, Officer Michael Schiavina and Officer Alain Beauregard stopped a vehicle on Stebbins Street in the city's Old Hill neighborhood. They approaching the vehicle that was occupied by the brothers Eddie and Juan Ortiz. Eddie fired at the officers hitting both. Michael J. Schiavina was hit in the chest and died at the scene. Alain Beauregard was hit in the head and died from his injury three days later.

The suspect Eddie Ortiz later committed suicide the next day as police closed in on him in an apartment in which he was hiding. Juan Ortiz was convicted for his part in shooting and sent to prison. He was been paroled from prison October 2014.
