The town of Tonkawa was first settled during the Cherokee Strip Land Run in 1893. The town was incorporated in 1894 and has a population of about 3100 today. Its heyday was in 1921 when the discovery of the Three Sands Oil Field just south of town, boosted its population to over 10,000. It was also the site of a World War II POW camp.
City Hall was constructed in 1923. It is a two-story dark red brick building with white trim. The front door is located within a slightly projected brick entrance bay, constructed to resemble a castle-like entry. Projected brick pilasters frame a pointed archway. There is a masonry block water table painted white, in which the cornerstone shows the architect, contractors and the City Council at the time of construction. The dark brick and extensive white trim gives a very formal look.
Tonkawa has a Council/Manager type government, with four Council members, a Mayor and City Manager. The Council meets on the third Tuesday of each month at 5:30.
This building houses the City Manager and the court. An adjacent building to the north also contains City utility and other offices.
