An information board and map inside the gatehouse of Nottingham Castle.

"In the Middle Ages Nottingham Castle was one of the largest and most imposing castles in the land. After William the Conqueror built the first timber fortification here in 1068 it was enlarged and strengthened many times. In 1651, at the end of the Civil War, much of the castle was destroyed and the gatehouse was reduced to something like its present height. This gatehouse was the main entrance to the medieval castle. It was approached by a stone bridge over a wide, dry moat. To enter the castle you then had to cross a drawbridge that could be defended by soldiers firing arrows through slits in the walls of the towers on either side. You then passed through the gatehouse by a long, narrow passage that could be closed off by a great gate of iron and wood and an iron portcullis. The upper parts of the gatehouse, the bridge and the defensive walls were rebuilt in 1908. "
