A 40' by 8' square granite obelisk topped by an 18" by 36" by 18" bronze eagle with outspread wings is memorial to the men and women from Berlin, CT who served their country in times of war. The memorial was fabricated by the Fox-Becker Granite Company. The landscape architect was William F. Brooks and the sculptor was Charles Henry Niehaus. The monument was dedicated on November 11, 1920.

A bronze plaque on the east side of the obelisk contains the dedication:

1920 ERECTED BY THE TOWN OF BERLIN IN HONOR OF HER PATRIOTIC MEN AND WOMEN WHO SERVED THEIR COUNTRY IN TIME OF WAR FOR THE DEAD - A TRIBUTE FOR THE LIVING - A MEMORY FOR POSTERITY - AN EMBLEM OF LOYALTY TO THE FLAG OF THEIR COUNTRY

A plaque on the south side of the obelisk is inscribed:

THE CIVIL WAR 1861-1865

A bronze plaque on the south side of the obelisk is inscribed:

THE SPANISH-AMERICAN WAR 1898

A bronze plaque on the north side of the obelisk is inscribed:

THE WORLD WAR 1914-1918

Several other monument to other wars are located in the plaza. An Operation Desert Storm monument is placed directly in front of the obelisk.
