1984 wurde im Bereich der Start-und-Ziel-Schleife und der Südschleife die zu dieser Zeit „modernste und sicherste Grand-Prix-Strecke der Welt“ eröffnet. Die damals 4,5 Kilometer lange GP-Strecke wurde direkt an die 20,8 Kilometer lange Nordschleife angebunden. Beide Teilstrecken können zu einem 26 Kilometer langen Gesamtkurs zusammengefasst werden, der jedoch nur in abgeänderter Form für Rennen benutzt wird: Bei VLN-Rennen ohne die Müllenbachschleife (24,433 Kilometer), beim 24-Stunden-Rennen ohne die Mercedes-Arena (25,378 Kilometer). Weiterhin kann die Grand-Prix-Strecke in den Sprint-Circuit (kurze Variante) und den Müllenbach-Circuit (südlicher Teil der Strecke) unterteilt werden.
Im Zuge des Projekts Nürburgring 2009 wurde ab 2007 in rund zweijähriger Bauzeit ein großes Freizeitzentrum mit Achterbahn, Einkaufszentrum, Kneipenviertel, Hotel und Feriendorf in unmittelbarer Nähe der Rennstrecke errichtet."
