Gargoyle at St. Nicolai
Die Stadtkirche Sankt Nikolai wurde im 15. Jahrhundert erbaut. In der Nacht vom 19. zum 20.10.1772 entstand der große Stadtbrand, der auch die Kirche zum Opfer gefallen ist. Sie brannte bis auf die Umfassungsmauern ab. Sogar die 4 großen Glocken des Kirchturmes waren geschmolzen.
Ab 1773 wurde mit dem Wiederaufbau begonnen und die Kirche entstand in der heutigen Form als dreischiffige, spätgotische Hallenkirche mit veränderten Turm. Sie hatte nun nur noch 3 Glocken, wovon die große Glocke 1917 dem ersten Weltkrieg geopfert wurde. 1933 wurde erst eine neue dritte Glocke beschaffen die in Apolda gegossen wurde. An der südlichen Außenwand der Kirche sind schöne Baldachinen, Konsolen und Pfeilerfialen zu bewundern.

On the southern wall of the church are beautiful canopies, consoles and pillars.
