The City of Metropolis, IL has laid claim, for over 30 yrs. now, to being the Home of Superman. This claim has brought visitors from all over the world to Metropolis, IL. A Superman Celebration is held annually the second weekend of June. In 1993, the City unveiled a 15 ft. tall, 4000 lb. statue of none other than the Man of Steel himself! Some street names have been changed to reflect the Superman theme, such as Lois Lane and Superman Square. The City also has also re-named their local newspaper, The Metropolis Planet, and boasts a Kryptonite meteorite located at Third and Ferry streets. A Super Museum is located near the statue and houses one of the largest collections of Superman comic books and memorabilia in the world.
