The maps are of a standard format and are mounted on a tall black pillar. The "you are here" is located at the centre of the lower map. A circle is drawn, with the "you are here " at its centre and indicates a distance equal to a 5 minute walk. The upper map shows a circle the equivalent to a fifteen minute walk with "you are here " being at the centre.

The map is orientated head-up so that the top of the map indicates the direction ahead of where the map is being viewed from. For those that like to know where "north" is a directional arrow is set into the ground at the base of the pillar.

The map has a hidden grid with letters across the map and numbers down the map. A list of streets and landmarks are shown below the map with grid co-ordinates, for example "C3 ", indicated to allow the location to be found easily.

The map has a key to indicate, amongst other information:

  • Cycle Hire Stations
  • Underground Stations
  • Docklands Light Railway Stations
  • Bus Stations
  • Bus Stops
  • River Services
  • National Rail Stations
  • Taxi Ranks
  • Retail Outlets
  • Hotels
  • Car Parks

Roads are shown in black; footpaths in blue; water in light blue; landmarks in yellow; parks in green.

The various types of map pillars are:
