The trent & Mersey Canal was built in 1777 to carry bulk cargoes, especially salt, between the River Mersey and the River Trent.
This area of Cheshire has been a major salt production area since Roman Times. After the canal as built production greatly increased with various salt mines, and brine pumping stations. Various chemical factories for associated products also sprang up along the canal.
Many have now closed but this one is still working and this Warren Truss bridge carries pipes for use by the factory.
Tata Chemicals Europe (formerly Brunner Mond (UK) Limited) is a UK-based chemicals company that is a subsidiary of Tata Chemicals Limited, itself a part of the India-based Tata Group. Its principal products are soda ash, sodium bicarbonate, calcium chloride and associated alkaline chemicals.
