The pub in Maid Marian Way is reputed to be one of the oldest and most haunted in the city.

Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: Unable to handle the high pressure role of running the pub, this man took his own life - the shade remains in the building. A highwayman is also suspected of haunting the inn. The caves under the pub are said to be haunted by a young child, a four year old girl.

Here is what Lee Roberts, one of UK's leading Parnormal Investigators, has to say...
"The Ye Olde Salutation Inn or the SAL as most of us locals call it is one of the oldest public houses in Nottingham. It sits in the heart of Nottingham town centre, which can be a scary place at the best of times, and is situated at the foot of Nottingham Castle on Maid Marion way.

Not only is the Salutation famous for being one of the oldest public houses but also for have a system of caves that run deep below the pub. As a ghost hunter that brings on all sorts of new challenges and activity as not only have we got a public house with all the old and modern history to it but we can dig deeper into time and go way back and try and uncover some great evidence.

As the Salutation is a working public house it is open most weekends to the local pub dwellers and clubbers the ghost hunt is mainly down in the system of caves for most of the night and then once the pub closes at 2 am we can then have access to the rest of the location.

The caves are on two floors with the main cave at the bottom and a system of smaller caves on the upper floor. We began the night on the lower floor which is the biggest cave to gather everyone in to do the meet and greets and to give out Health and Safety instructions.

The first thing we tried was to use our own senses to pick up on spirit, ghosts, activity in the cave. I am a big fan of this as it opens people up and also relaxes them. As soon as we started Alison who is the Salutations resident ghost hunter began telling spirit to move away and move onto someone else. Alison has worked in the Salutation for many and knows most of the ghosts’ stories from down there and also most of the names. She wouldn’t mind me saying she is very energetic and loud when it comes to contacting the spirits, and if she isn’t happy with them boy does she tell them so! There around 30 different spirits reported at the Salutation and 1000’s of sightings.

As the lights go off we quickly realise that being down deep in a cave is very different to being up in a house, pub or theatre. No Street lights, no moon light and no outside noise. We were plunged into complete darkness, the only thing that gave us any kind of orientation was a small red light on the top of the stair way to show the way out!

Guests at first were all of a panic as they got used to the darkness, but soon settled down and after the medium put protection up we started calling out for spirit to make a tap, bang etc etc. One thing you need to know about me is that I am an open-minded believer as far as spirits are concerned. I believe that there is life after death, but I am open minded as far as to what they can do on the other side.

Guests, mediums and investigators started seeing flashes of light, shadows and started to hear shuffling noises, one of the mediums even has her zip on her jeans supposedly unzipped to the amusement on the guests and especially Alison who confirmed this is a regular occurrence!

I was sat obviously thinking that the lights and shadows were just eyes playing tricks on us and was trying to look at it from a scientific point of view. After approximately 30 minutes my eyes were adapting to the dark and I could make out the outline of the entrance to the stairs. As I started concentrating on that outline what I can only explain as a tall figure walked down the stairs and into the cave! I saw it come into the cave and walk over to the right where a member of the Haunted Events UK team was sat. I at first put this down again as my eyes making shapes in the dark, but as I was trying to make more details of this figure Angela, the Haunted Events UK team member, said in a very scared and panicked voice “I have a man looking right at me!”, I asked her to explain and she went on to tell me that she saw a figure come down the stairs and walk over to her and bent over to look at her almost nose to nose.

As she was saying this I could still see this figure and it started to move away and towards me, It then stood in the middle of the cave still and seemed to be looking down to the guests. I still wasn’t believing it but wanted to make sure A. It wasn’t anyone messing around or B. It was the same thing we were both seeing. I got up and explained to the guests that at this point I want no-one to turn on the torches until I say so, I moved slowly over to where I could see the figure and stood in the very same spot. Baring in mind I couldn’t see Angela as it was still too dark I asked if she could point to where the figure was last seen, I then turned my torch on and low and behold she was pointing straight at me.

On conclusion Either it was a coincidence that we both made figures up in our minds and saw the same thing, Angela could see me in the dark, even though I couldn’t see her, and pointed to me but I have worked with Angela for a while and trust her 100% or it was a spirit we both saw.

I am still not sure what it was we saw but food for thought for our next visit.

As the night progressed we had some good results on a calling out experiment including an EMF meter reacting to our voices, as we asked a question we asked for one flash for yes and two for no, it was responding really well and we even places some K2 meters around, far enough so not to be reacting to the EMF and they too went off on command. I again found this really odd and looked for reasonable explanations such as surges in electrical energies or faulty equipment but I couldn’t find the answer.

The night finished up in the public house with some table tipping and glass moving experiments. I am always very sceptical with these experiments unless I am 100% sure of those taking part. I like to usually stand back and watch and let the guests take part. This not only gives the guests a good experience but also stops blame coming my way if the glass moves; I am always a bit paranoid when it comes to those experiments as it is so easy to fake it. I usually let the guests have a go and see if they get a good result and then explain what I look for in the experiment as far as spotting the fakers and getting good results, and then let them have another go and see if we get the same result. Anyone who had been faking it before may think twice now.

We also conducted an EVP experiment, seeing if we can pick up on movement or voices on the sound recorders when asking out for spirit to do so. Early indications of that experiment looks good as the Haunted Events UK team tell me there are lots of footsteps and movement and also a voice that seems to say “whisper whisper”. If this is true then I will be impressed as I know all was in the room with the voice recorder in the middle, no one moved and certainly no one spoke to the recorder.

All in all a great night, with some good bits of evidence to look into and certainly looking forward to our next visit."
