"Nach einer Bauzeit von 20 Monaten wurde der Stuttgarter Fernsehturm am 5. Februar 1956 in Betrieb genommen. Mit seiner imponierenden Höhe von 217 m ist er das Ur-Modell für die Fernsehtürme in aller Welt.
Ursprünglich wollte der damalige Süddeutsche Rundfunk seine Antennen für die Ausstrahlung der Fernseh- und der UKW-Radiosendungen auf einen der damals üblichen 200 Meter hohen, mit Drahtseilen gesicherten Eisen-Gittermasten stellen. Dieses monströse Projekt rief den als Brückenbauer und Statiker bekannt gewordenen Stuttgarter Ingenieur Prof. Fritz Leonhardt auf den Plan. Seine Idee war es, statt eines hässlichen Gittermastes eine elegante Betonnadel aus dem Wald von Degerloch wachsen zu lassen und diese mit einem touristisch und gastronomisch nutzbaren Turmkorb mit Aussichtsplattformen zu versehen...
Heute ist der Fernsehturm beliebtes Wahrzeichen Stuttgarts. Genießen Sie die Aussicht (bei gutem Wetter bis zur Schwäbischen Alb!) von der Turmplattform und vom Turm- und Panoramacafé!"
