A Michigan monument committee was formed in 1903 under the leadership of J.A. Griffin, a former Andersonville prisoner. A sum of $6,000 was appropriated for the erection of the monument, and the formation of a formal monument commission. The Monument stands on the grounds of the Andersonville Civil War Prison and was dedicated on May 30, 1904

The Inscription on the monument reads:

IN MEMORIUM
ERECTED BY THE STATE OF MICHIGAN
TO HER SOLDIERS AND SAILORS
WHO WER IMPRISONED ON THES GROUNDS
