This is an adobe building, the cheapest, and practically the only material naturally available in the area when it was built in 1878. Florence was established in 1866 and quickly became the major agricultural and trading center in the area. It preceded Phoenix by decades. The structure was designed by Levi Ruggles, one of the pioneer developers of the town. It combines Sonoran and Anglo American features. It is surrounded by a deep roof overhang, providing shade on the street facing sides of the building. It functioned as a courthouse until 1891 and then served a number of other public functions. To preserve the building, the McFarland State Historical Park was established in 1974 and it contains the building and its inner courtyard. It now houses the Florence Visitors Center. Tours are available.
