Welcome to

WHEELOCK
WHARF

The village was named after the River
Wheelock which runs through it, with
Wheelock being derived from and old Welsh
source meaning "winding river". The first
recorded name for the village is Hoileck/
Hoiloch in the Doomsday Book.

By 1096 the name had evolved to Ouelock
then in 1382 to Whelock. Two years later, in
1384 it was Welock and by 1390 the name
Wheelock was settled upon.
WHEELOCK INFORMATION BOARD

Unspoilt Wheelock, is situated in a picturesque location on the canal network. Boasting a fine example of architectural preservation, the former wharf transhipment warehouse has been tastefully converted into a restuarant. From the bottom of Wheelock Fliht, the canal winds parallel to the River Wheelock, passing under the main West Coast railway line by Ettiley Heath.

Visit the historic market town of Sandbach, with its bustling market taking place every Thursday. Browse the many individual shops dotted in-between the town's buildings of historical note.

Two lavishly decorated Anglo-Saxon crosses dated to the first half of the ninth century are situated on the cobbled square. It has been suggested that the crosses are earlier (643 AD) and were erected to mark the introduction of Christianity into Mercia by Peada, son of Penda the last pagan King of Mercia.
