Le plus ancien et le plus prestigieux monument d’Hazebrouck élève sa silhouette depuis le XVIe siècle à l’écart de la ville. L’édifice religieux date de 1432 et est dédié à Saint-Eloi.
Sa construction, typique des églises de Flandre, aligne trois vaisseaux avec une tour en façade. Sa flèche, détruite par un tir d’obus lors de la dernière guerre, a été reconstruite en 1994 grâce aux pouvoirs publics et à l’aide d’une association créée à cet effet : l’APREC.
Deux chapelles en brique et en pierre, réalisées dans un style gothique flamboyant et dédiées à saint Georges, patron des arbalétriers (aujourd’hui saint Sébastien, patron des archers) et à sainte Anne, patronne de la Chambre de rhétorique. Elles rappellent le rôle important au XVIe siècle des confréries locales.
Cinq retables en bois ornent l’église, dont celui du chœur dédié à Saint-Éloi, son patron. Sur les murs latéraux, entre les baies, a été placé le chemin de croix, œuvre du peintre régional Lucien Jonas (1880-1947) et commande officielle de la municipalité dirigée par l’abbé Lemire.
Elle sera la seule église hazebrouckoise jusqu’en 1897, date de construction de l’église Notre-Dame dans le quartier du Nouveau-Monde.

The oldest and most prestigious monument of Hazebrouck elevates its silhouette since the sixteenth century away from the city. The religious building dates from 1432 and is dedicated to Saint-Eloi.
Its construction, typical of the churches of Flanders, aligns three ships with a tower in front. Its spire, destroyed by shelling during the last war, was rebuilt in 1994 thanks to the authorities and the help of an association created for this purpose: APREC.
Two brick and stone chapels, made in a Gothic style and dedicated to St. George, patron saint of the crossbowmen (now St Sebastian, patron of the archers) and to St. Anne, patron saint of the Chamber of rhetoric. They recall the important role of the local brotherhoods in the 16th century.
Five wooden altarpieces decorate the church, including the choir dedicated to Saint-Éloi, its patron. On the side walls, between the bays, was placed the Way of the Cross, work of the regional painter Lucien Jonas (1880-1947) and official commission of the municipality directed by Father Lemire.
It will be the only Hazebrueck church until 1897 when the Notre-Dame church was built in the New World.
