Florence was founded as a trading and agricultural town in 1866 by Civil War veterans. The E.N. Fish & Co. store was built in 1874 of plastered adobe brick. It served variously as a store, Wells Fargo office, hotel and apartment building until the Legion Post moved into it in 1944. American Legion Post No. 9 was established in 1921, two years after the the American Legion Organization was established by Congress in 1919. In pursuit of their goal of mutual helpfulness, the Post established classrooms for African American children in the 1950's so they didn't need to travel to a segregated school 30 miles away in the back of a truck. A teacher and 32 children were accommodated within this building.
