An Lochan Uaine translates as the little green loch and is appropriate here as this tiny loch's waters are of a strange green hue.
The loch can be reached from the end of the public road from Aviemore at Glenmore Lodge where there is room for parking. From here it is around a mile along a good path amidst old Caledonian pines in Glen More. On reaching the Ryvoan Pass, a gap between the steep sides of the mountains, the loch comes into view on the right. A path leads down to the waters edge and there is a viewing platform on the south side. The far (east) side is pathless but can be walked with care.
The colour of the loch is most vivid from high above on the path. The legend is that pixies wash their clothes in its waters to give it its colour, although other theories suggest it is the surrounding greenery reflecting in the water, or a high level of minerals.
The loch is better viewed from outwith than swam in as it is reported there are a number of leeches in the water. The other remarkable thing about the loch is that there is no visible outlet from it.
