Florence was founded on the south bank of the Gila River in 1866, shortly after the land was annexed from Mexico. The Gila, like most desert rivers, has a large flow of water for a short time followed by long dry spells. Far from the mountains and next to a dry river the town depended on wells for water. As the town developed a modern water system, pressure was supplied by pumping it to the water tower for pressurized distribution. The tower continues to fill that purpose and its base is located in the town utility department yard.
