Union Veterans of the Civil war got a tombstone paid for by the US Government, and for those who did not have a spot in a family plot, the Grand Army of the Republic, a fraternal organization of Union veterans, provided a burial plot for their members.
The GAR Union Veteran Cemetery is located in a leafy section of Greenwood cemetery, several hundred feet away from the cemetery for Confederate pensioners.
