The present Puerto San Juan Lighthouse is the fourth in a series of lighthouses to occupy this location since 1876. It rises 51 feet above the 6th level of the El Morro fortress. The tower was built in 1908 in a Spanish influenced style. A brick tower is surrounded by a crenellated parapet with ornamental guardhouses at each corner.
The lighthouse uses a third-order Fresnel lens, manufactured in France by Sautter, Lemonnier, & Cie. Originally the lens was turned by a falling weight. In 1932 an electrical drive mechanism was installed.
In the early 1990's the lighthouse was repaired and repainted gray by the National Park Service to restored its original 1906 appearance.
