A replacement bell on a historical display at the north entrance to the Salado Baptist Church at 210 S Main Street in downtown Salado that formerly held the original church bell from 1990-2004, when the original bell was re-hung into a new bell tower.

The bell has been moved around several times, but is still in service calling the baptist faithful to worship at this Baptist church whose former pastor, Rev. G. W. Baines, was the maternal grandfather of US President Lyndon Baines Johnson (who my grandmother turned down for a date in 1927 at Southwest Texas State Teacher's Normal School <-- TRUE!!!!!).

Two plaques at the display read as follows:

On the left, the plaque for the 1964 bell tower (that was demolished in 1990):

"ERECTED BY GIFTS OF DESCENDANTS
In Memory of
REV. GEORGE WASHINGTON BAINES
Former Pastor

February 1868 - July 1877
June 1881 - November 1882

Huffman Baines Jr. -- Chm of Project
Virginia Kinnison -- Co-Chairman"

Plaque on the right:

"CHURCH BELL PURCHASED IN 1879

1864 -- Salado Baptist Church Organized

1878 -- Original Church Building Erected

1879 -- Bell Placed in Cupola of Original Building

1962 -- Original Building Torn Down

1964 -- Bell Tower Erected in Memory of Rev. G. W. Baines. Original Bell Placed in Tower.

1990 -- Bell Tower Erected in 1964 Demolished.

2004 - New Tower Erected to Commemorate 140th Anniversary of the Church. Original 1979 Bell Placed on Tower."
