Overlooking the Alkali Lake, constructed in 1998, is this Waterfowl Viewing Area. Located on Hwy. 14 near the junction of Hwy. 120 about 3 km SE of downtown Cody.

The viewing area over looks Alkali Lake which gets its name from the high concentration of soluble alkali metals, especially sodium.
The viewing area is large accommodating various vantage points for the experienced bird watcher or the casual passersby.
Alkali Lake provides habitat for waterfowl, shorebirds, wading birds and migratory geese and songbirds which can be viewed from this area.
American Avocet is an elegant, mid-size shore bird and are easily distinguished by their long legs, up turned black bill, broad black and white striping on the back.
The American Coot is a mid-sized black bird that is somewhat dick like in appearance. It floats and bobs like a cork as it dives to feed on submerged vegetation.
American White Pelican is North America’s largest flying bird and has a wingspan of over 9 feet and weighs between 15 and 18 pounds. A powerful flier, the American White Pelican has been seen soaring over 20,000 feet.
Wilson’s Phalarope is a small shorebird and is a bright cinnamon color during the breeding season. Most unusual it is the female that is the most brightly colored.
Northern Shoveler is a medium size duck is aptly named for its broad shovel shaped bill, which it uses to feed by skimming the water surface for small invertebrates and plants.
