Stained glass windows in St Stephen's church, Sneinton - Nottingham.

"1 - A window with a pair of cinquefoil headed lights:

The left light depicts Christ as the sower, and beneath is illustrated the parable of the Good Samaritan. It is inscribed:

To the Glory of God and the beloved and honoured memory of Henry Taylor M.D. who died August 7th 1889 aged 70 years and Harriet his wife who died January 2nd 1888 aged 67 years

In the right-hand light is Christ blessing the children, and the welcoming home of the prodigal son. It carries the inscription:

To the Glory of God and in memory of Arthur Thomas Taylor who died February 10th 1866 aged 22 years.

There is also stained glass in the tracery

This window was given by Dr A T Taylor and were designed and manufactured by Hardmans

 

2 - Another window (no image) with a pair of cinquefoil headed lights and with stained glass in the tracery

The upper depictions in the lights are perhaps of the wise and foolish virgins (from Matthew 25.1-13). the lower left shows the baptism of Christ, and the lower right is a meal with Christ presiding, perhaps the meal at Emmaus.

The left light carries the inscription:

To the Glory of God and in memory of Annie Rosa Taylor who died October 26th 1885 aged 33 years

and the right light reads:

To the Glory of God and in memory of Ethel Maud Taylor who died January 18th aged 14 years

This window was also given by Dr A T Taylor, and was designed and manufactured by Hardmans

 

3 - The left-hand light shows St John and bears the test:

Pray for the soul of William Frederick Horner
Organist of this church 1864-1882
Who died 29th April 1885

The right-hand light depicts the Blessed Virgin. The inscription reads:

Pray for the soul of Meina Story
A devoted Worker and Benefactor
Daughter of Major General Valentine Story
She died 9th January 1887

4 - In the lft is a depiction of Nehemiah Prophet [sic] and the words:

Pray for the soul of William Henry Wilcockson
Banker and Organist who rescued the medieval choir stalls from destruction
and gave them to the church about 1848
1817-1887

St Paul is shown in the right-hand light, with the inscription:

Pray for the soul of
Vernon Wallaton Hutton MA Cantab.
Priest, Canon of Lincoln. Vicar 1868 to 1884 who was
Born 1842 and died 21st June 1887. Through his writing he
Bought the Catholic Faith to many thousands

This window, together with the previous (window 3), were transferred from the 1839 church. It is reported that the original darker background glass was replaced at the time of the move. They were damaged by a German air raid in 1941 and restored in 1944. (The information regarding the air raid damage was added at the time of the 1944 restoration.)

5 - This depicts St Stephanus and St Laurentius, and has the inscription:

Pray for the soul of
The Hon Rev Robert Margill Dalrymple MA Oxon
Largely through his munificence this church was rebuilt 1911
He died 19th April 1938 Aged 75

The window was designed in the style of the 15th century by the Nottingham stained glass artist Alexander Gascoyne. The dedication was added later when it was repaired after the air raid damage of 1941."
