The grave of Archie R. Ammons and his wife Phyllis is marked by a large granite headstone. On the front of the headstone is inscribed te family name AMMONS and below the opening line from his poem In Memoriam Mae Noblitt THIS IS JUST A PLACE . On the back of the headstone is the inscription:

Archie Randolph Ammons was born near Whiteville, NC on February 25, 2001. During World War II he served U.S. Navy, aboard the battleship escort U.S.S. Gunason. In 1949 he graduated from Wake Forest University with a major in biology and married Phyllis Plumbo. He then went on to earn a M.A. in English from University of California, Berkeley.

Ammons published his first poem Ommateum, with Doxology in 1955 but did not begin to publish his poetry regularly until 1965. In 1964 he joined the faculty of Cornell University, eventually becoming Goldwin Smith Professor of English and Poet in Residence. He retire in 1998. During his tenure at Cornell he received many awards for his poetry. Including winning the National Book Award for Poetry both in 1973 for Collected Poems and 1993 for Garbage.
