The golf club at St Michaels near the town of Leuchars was founded in 1903. The greenkeepers of St.Andrews, including Old Tom Morris and Hugh Hamilton helped lay out nine holes on hilly terrain between Leuchars and St Michaels, bounding the Edinburgh to Dundee railway line.
The course remained nine holes until 1996, when new land was acquired to extend the course to eighteen holes, with a par of 70, most of the new holes forming the front nine. The signature downhill short hole at the far end of the course became the 15th hole, with the final three holes running southwards along the railway line. St.Andrews and the Eden Estuary are in view from the higher parts of the course.
Green fees are £40 on Saturdays, but cheaper at other times of the week, with a £10 honesty box in operation during twilight hours.
