Der Riesen-Mammutbaum kann eine Höhe von mehr als 80 m erreichen. Der immergrüne Baum bildet eine schmale, kegelförmige Krone aus. Die Nadelschuppen sind kurz und blaugrün bzw. dunkelgrün und spiralförmig am Zweig angeordnet. Die zimtfarbige, faserig-schwammige und tief gefurchte Borke wird bis zu 60cm dick und schützt den Mammutbaum vor Waldbränden. Mammutbäume sind sehr langlebig (über 2000 Jahre). Sie gelten als die dem Volumen nach größten Bäume der Erdgeschichte.

The giant sequoia can reach a height of more than 80 m. The evergreen tree forms a narrow, conical crown. The needle scales are short and blue-green or dark-green and spirally arranged on the branch. The cinnamon-colored, fibrous-spongy and deeply furrowed bark is up to 60cm thick and protects the mammoth tree from forest fires. Mammoth trees are very long lasting (over 2000 years). They are regarded as the largest trees in earth history by volume.
