[EN] "Madrid gives the go-ahead for managing the caves of Ajuy
Even the administration of the island is shocked because, as the Ministry of Environment of the Spanish Central Government in Madrid reported through its coastal protection authority, the private enterprise of the caves in Ajuy was even officially approved. Almost a year ago, the dispute began when the authorities of Fuerteventura dealt with a private company that demanded entrance fees for visiting the caves as the alleged owner of the site. In doing so, the Coastal Law clearly defines that the use of the public coastal areas is freely and free of charge for everyone, unless a special permit is available. The company did not have this approval at the time when suddenly the access to the caves was blocked and visitors were asked to ask for entrance fees at questionable heights. Adults should be 7 €, residents 4 € and children 3 €. Quickly there were complaints, many visitors simply turned around again and demanded permission for the commercial use of this nature reserve. After the authorities got involved and a short time later they were chewed up again, the commercial use of the canary was finally interrupted by the Canary Department of Environmental Protection and the cave area became freely accessible again.
As officially stated, the company has been authorized to use this coastal section in the municipality of Pájara from 30 July for a whole year.
In November, the company submitted the application to the coastal protection authorities. 120 square meters of the cave area can now be officially used for an annual license fee of 1,343 euros for the paid sightseeing. No sooner had the Cabildo received a surprise message from the wind, together with the municipality of Pájara, it addressed the Ministry in Madrid and applied for all the background information related to the decision in this case, including insurance conditions, the approved area of ??use, or possibly with it Connected construction works. Island President Mario Cabrera pointed out the resistance from the island administration, which does not want to accept the limited use of such a culturally valuable public place on Fuerteventura. For many decades the impressive rock formations in Ajuy, which have been worked on by surf waves, have become an equally popular excursion destination for tourists and locals alike. As part of a natural monument, the caves are regarded as a valuable cultural heritage of the island, so it is difficult to justify free access and profit. "We have not yet received the Ministry's reply with the information requested by us, but it is more than worrying that this is done without informing the authorities concerned." Cabrera is sure to react with appropriate counter-measures If it is clear from the information that it is the same activity as last year. "
