Pozdne barokní zámek Vrbicany byl postaven v letech 1786–1789 Františkem Kresselem z Kvaltenberka, pravdepodobne na míste puvodní stredoveké tvrze.
František Karel Kressel z Kvaltenberka byl významným predstavitelem rodu a roku 1760 byl povýšený do panského stavu. Stal se prvním reditelem právnické fakulty na pražské universite a od roku 1782 stál v cele dvorské komise, která pripravovala josefínské církevní reformy. Mimo úredních aktivit byl i aktivním a vyhlášeným clenem zednárských lóží v Praze i Vídni.
