[DE] Eine Info-Plakette informiert: "Das Rathaus der Stadt Unkel wurde 1855 als Volksschule gebaut. Seit 1908 ist dort das Bürgermeisteramt untergebracht." Das Gebäude ist ein kantiges, zweistöckiges, gemauertes Gebäude aus dem 19. Jahrhundert, das ursprünglich als Grundschule konzipiert wurde.
Dies ist das Rathaus des kleinen Städtchens Unkel am Rhein. Unkel liegt im Landkreis Neuwied im Norden von Rheinland-Pfalz und ist Verwaltungssitz der gleichnamigen Verbandsgemeinde Unkel. Die Stadt liegt etwa 20 Kilometer südlich von Bonn am unteren Mittelrhein und hat Anteil am Naturpark Rhein-Westerwald.
Unkel wurde im Jahre 886 erstmals urkundlich erwähnt, ist sehr wahrscheinlich aber noch älter, wie Grabbeigaben aus 7. Jahrhundert belegen, die man in Unkel gefunden hat. In Unkel findet man an der Rheinpromenade heute noch Reste der Stadtbefestigung aus dem Jahre 1553 und im Stadtkern eine Denkmalzone mit etlichen unter Denkmalschutz stehenden Wohn- und Geschäftshäusern aus dem 17.-19. Jahrhundert. Im Jahre 1578 wurde Unkel erstmals in der Liste der kurkölnischen Städte aufgeführt. Eine förmliche Verleihung der Stadtrechte fand nie statt, deshalb wird dieses Datum als Stadtwerdung Unkels angesehen.
Unkel ist bekannt als Rotweinstadt sowie auch als (ehemaliger) Wohnsitz vieler bekannter Persönlichkeiten wie etwa Willy Brandt, Stefan Andres, Ferdinand Freiligrath, Leonhard Reinirkens oder Annette von Droste-Hülshoff. So war Unkel die späte Wahlheimat von Willy Brandt, dem ehemaligen Bürgermeister von Berlin, Altbundeskanzler und Friedensnobelpreisträgers. Im Rathaus können Besucher das private Arbeitszimmer von Willy Brandt besichtigen. Eine kleine Ausstellung zeigt unter anderem das Abiturzeugnis und die Friedensnobelpreisurkunde.

This is the town hall of the little town Unkel on the Rhine. Unkel is situated in the district of Neuwied, in Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany, on the right bank of the Rhine, near Remagen, about 20 km southeast of Bonn.
Unkel was mentioned for the first time in the year 886, but probably it is even older, as can be seen from the seventh-century grave excavations found in Unkel. In Unkel you can still find remnants of the town fortification dating back to 1553 on the Rhine promenade, and a monument zone with several listed residential and commercial buildings from the 17th-19th century. In 1578 Unkel was first listed in the list of "kurkölnische" cities. A formal conferring of the city rights never took place, therefore this date is regarded as Unkel becoming a city.
Unkel is known as a wine town and also as a (former) residence of many well-known personalities such as Willy Brandt, Stefan Andres, Ferdinand Freiligrath, Leonhard Reinirkens or Annette von Droste-Hülshoff. For example Unkel was the late adopted home of Willy Brandt, the former mayor of Berlin, former chancellor and Nobel Peace Prize laureate. Visitors can visit Willy Brandt's private study in the town hall. A small exhibition shows, among other things, the Abitur certificate and the Nobel Peace Prize certificate.
