The Homesteader Museum, though small in comparison to some state museums, was one of the most interesting we visited. There are typical homesteader cabins, workshops and equipment also displayed outside.

This nice example of a Great Majestic Cook Stove is outside in the Homesteader's cabin. Though it is stated in the information transcribed below that this Majestic Cook Stove is smaller than your standard stoves of its day. It is well preserved and has two warming compartments, six cooking surfaces and an oven with a very large chrome "The Great Majestic" name plate attached to the front. Note just below the coal receptacle is "Slotted Holes for Coal and Holes for Wood. This Great Majestic Cook Stove was designed for either coal or wood. Saturday is Baking Day

The Great Majestic Cookstove
c. 1900

The stove was the most important furnishing in a homestead. Not only was it used for preparing food, it heated water for washing and irons for pressing clothes on laundry day. During colder months, the cook stove was the only source of heat to warm the home.

Mary Elaine Bever was born in a snow storm in May. To keep her warm, she was placed in the warming part of the cook stove!

The majestic Stove Company produced stoves from the 1880s until the 1940s, while in business they produced approximately two million stoves. Prior to World War II, the Majestic Stove Company was one of the 10 largest companies in the United States.

The Great Majestic Cook Stove here is a cabinet model. It has a storage compartment below the cooking oven and was the smallest sized Majestic ever made in a full cookstove model. (Less than 20% of stoves sold were this size.)
