John Gowdy was 17 when he enlisted in a regiment commanded by Colonel Erastus Wolcott June 1, 1776. The regiment was immediately sent to New London, Connecticut. He spent his entire seven month enlistment standing guard and assisted in building Fort Trumbull.
He enlisted again in 1777 for another seven month enlistment, this time in a company commanded by Captain Robinson. This time he saw service in Fort Griswold, Connecticut and in Rhode Island.
