The information sign nearby says:

"On December 9, 1827, seven Aboriginal men rescued the crew of a small European boat after a huge wave overturned it on the bar.

"This diary entry from the Commandant Crotty depicts the heroic and sharing nature of Aboriginal people.

'In the morning, after the 'Alligator' had sailed and the Pilot had just landed in the inner harbour, a tremendous wave (ngaluwigang) upset the boat throwing the crew of 7 into the surge (garuwaga djukala). The sea (garuwa) ran so high that no European would venture to assist them. Seven aborigines (guribiyn) coming up dashed into the surge and succeeded in gaining the boat (maruwuy), which they soon righted and placed 4 of the crew in her, after which they went to the assistance of the other 3 men. They brought them safe on shore (bunagu), one nearly exhausted. Nothing could exceed the bravery (dhanbaan dhanbaan) and humanity with which these poor blacks on this occasion. As a small reward, I ordered them some provisions, with a glass of 'grog'. Governor Darling ordered a medal to be struck for each of them and blankets and trousers supplied.'
"Diary entry is an extract from the book, "Place of Banishment - Port Macquarie 1818-1832"."
