Information board at Mackley's Bridge on the Grantham Canal, Owthorpe.
"At this point the canal runs through the parish of Owthorpe; old forms of the name are Ovetorp (Domesday) and Hustorp (c1190). The Parish probably gets its name from it position on the eastern slopes of the Nottinghamshire Woldsds and from a softening of the words Owerthorpe or Overthorpe, derived from the native 'Ower' and Danish 'Over' - meaning 'above Thorpe' (a hamlet or village).
The lands of the Parish were in the possession of the Hutchinson family for several hundred years, the estale which included ihe Hall near Owthorpe village was sold in 1773 to Sir Robert Howe Bromley). The Hall was pulled down in the mid-nineteenth century."
