Originally a tavern, the Birchwood Inn housed the Temple Post Office, a small general store, Town Meeting Hall and as antique shop. Commercial traffic originally supported the business giving way to tourists in later years. It evolved from a pure tavern to a boarding house and hotel, to a restaurant and inn for tourists. The attached barn was added in 1847-48.
