In 1794 Giuseppe Piazzi placed a meridian noon mark across the floor of the Palermo Cathedral. A sun spot from a hole on a dome shines on the north south brass line in the marble floor at exactly solar noon. Zodiac symbols show the date.

The Archbishop Fillipo Lopez y Royo and Viceroy of Sicily commissioned Giuseppe Piazzi to build a beautiful meridian in his cathedral. One reason was to educate people on the importance of noon as Italy switched to French Hours based on noon from the traditional Italian hours based on sunset. Piazzi is best known as the Sicilian astronomer that discovered the major asteroid Ceres in 1801.

We were fortunate to be touring the cathedral near noon and were able to observe the sun spot centered on the meridian at solar noon, 1:03 PM Central European Daylight Saving Time on 12 May 2017
