------
In the First World War the town lion was nailed on the door of the town hall.
Ritter von Mann, the designer of the Rathaussaales was asked to draft a design and architect Rieperdinger supervised the execution. On Sunday, 12.12.1915 it was made. After a "patriotic celebration" in the Great Hall of the town hall, for the price between ten pfennigs and five marks, each participant could acquire one of the approx. 4,000 available nails and strike them into the oak door under expert guidance. For the large nails were paid up to 50 Marks for each.
Thus this "city lion" was planned as a heroic symbol of war, it was executed as a reminder of the distress, sorrow and misery of the war and its inhuman consequences. Translated by lumbricus
