Josef Konšel se narodil 20. 3. 1875 v Urcicích, po maturite na gymnáziu v Kromeríži v roce 1893 odešel na Bohosloveckou fakultu v Olomouci, kde byl roku 1897 vysvecen na kneze. Poté vstoupil na Lesnickou fakultu Vysoké školy zemedelské ve Vídni, kterou ukoncil v roce 1901 s titulem lesního inženýra. V témže roce nastoupil jako referent ústredního reditelství arcibiskupských statku v Kromeríži, kde následne venoval 21 let svého života tamním lesum. Tvrde a zodpovedne pracoval, dále studoval. Skládal ucitelské i lesnické odborné zkoušky, profesne stoupal, byl postupne jmenován nadlesním, lesmistrem, prednostou lesní taxacní kanceláre, lesním radou ústredního reditelství a na jare 1921 centrálním reditelem arcibiskupských statku.
Od roku 1922 byl Josef Konšel jmenován prvním rádným profesorem lesní tvorby, pestení a nauky o lesních stanovištích na nove zrízeném Lesnickém odboru Vysoké škole zemedelské v Brne. Vysoká škola tak získala vynikajícího pedagoga a vedce. Pedagogická a vedecká cinnost prof. Josefa Konšela se rozvíjela na Lesnické fakulte i v rade ucených a odborných spolecností mimo VŠZ v Brne. Vybudoval a vybavil pomuckami a knihovnou fakultní Ústav pestení lesu, a také Státní výzkumný ústav pro pestení lesu a lesnickou biologii, fakticky se tak stal vedoucím pestební složky ceskoslovenského lesnického výzkumu. Profesor Konšel byl clenem správního výboru pro rízení školního lesního statku (nyní Školní lesní podnik Masarykuv les Krtiny), Masarykovy akademie práce a Cs. akademie zemedelské i nekolika zahranicních organizací. V letech 1927/1928 a 1932/1933 byl zvolen dekanem Lesnické fakulty, v letech 1933/1934 rektorem a 1934/1935 prorektorem VŠZ v Brne. Na záver své kariéry obdržel titul cestného doktora technických ved.
Prof. Konšel nezapomínal ani na publikacní cinnost. Vydal kupríkladu knihy Nauka o lesních stanovištích (1923), Švýcarskými lesy (1925), preklad díla finského lesnického badatele A. K. Cajandera Pojem a význam lesních typu (1927) ci Lesnické pokusnictví pestební (1928) i knihu vzpomínek Moje cesta. Predevším to však byla nadcasová ucebnice Strucný nástin tvorby a pestení lesa v biologickém ponetí (1931), která prinesla i zásadní definice základních pojmu a zásad lesnických ved. Významné je i redigování Naucného slovníku lesnického, díla dokonceného za rekordních osm let v roce 1940.
Josef Konšel zustal po celý život také verný také svému knežskému poslání, i v duchode, do kterého odešel v roce 1938. Podzim svého života prožil ve Velké Bystrici u Olomouce, kde 18. 7. 1958 zemrel.

Josef Konšel was born on March 20, 1875 in Urcice, after graduating from gymnasium in Kromeríž in 1893 he went to the Bohoslovice Faculty in Olomouc, where he was ordained priest in 1897. He then joined the Forestry Faculty of the Agricultural University in Vienna, which he graduated in 1901 with the title of Forest Engineer. In the same year, he joined the referent of the Central Directorate of the Archbishop's Farms in Kromeríž, where he subsequently devoted 21 years of his life to his forests. He worked hard and responsible, he studied. He was a teacher and forest expert, he was professionally ascended, he was gradually appointed as a bourgeoisie, a lesmist, the head of a forest tax office, a forest director of the central headquarters, and in the spring of 1921 the central director of the Archbishop's estates.
Since 1922, Josef Konšel has been appointed the first regular professor of forestry, forestry and forestry education at the newly established Forestry Department of the University of Agriculture in Brno. The college has thus acquired an outstanding educator and scientist. Pedagogical and scientific activities prof. Josef Konšela developed at the Faculty of Forestry and in a number of scholarly and professional societies outside the VŠZ in Brno. He built and equipped with aids and library the Faculty of Forestry Institute, as well as the State Research Institute for Forestry and Forestry Biology, in fact became the head of the Czechoslovak forestry research department. Professor Konšel was a member of the administrative committee for the management of the school forestry farm (now the Forestry Enterprise Masaryk Forest Krtiny), the Masaryk Academy of Labor and the Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences. The Academy of Agriculture and several foreign organizations. In 1927/1928 and 1932/1933 he was elected Dean of the Forestry Faculty, in 1933/1934 Rector and 1934/1935 Vice-Rector of VŠZ in Brno. At the end of his career, he received the title of Honorary Doctor of Technical Sciences.
Prof. He did not forget the publishing activity. He published, for example, a book on Forest Habitats (1923), the Swiss Forest (1925), a translation of the work of the Finnish forestry researcher A.K. Cajander, The Concept and Importance of Forest Types (1927), Forestry Growing Experiment (1928), and a book of Remembrance My Way. Above all, however, it was the timeless textbook Brief Outline of the Creation and Growing of Forests in the Biological Notion (1931), which brought also a fundamental definition of the basic concepts and principles of forestry sciences. Significant is the editing of the Forestry Dictionary, a work completed in a record eight years in 1940.
Josef Konšel remained faithful throughout his life as well as his priestly mission, even in the retirement he left in 1938. He spent his autumn life in Velké Bystrice near Olomouc, where he died on July 18, 1958.
