Blacksmith Shop
Replica Built:1958
Fanshawe Pioneer Village's Blacksmith Shop is a reproduction building designed by Upper Thames River Conservation Authority superintendent Rex Bishop and constructed in 1959. The Blacksmith Shop was one of the original four buildings on site when the Village opened on June 26, 1959.
The building construction features large front doors, which permitted entry for horses and wagons and also provided better ventilation for smoke and heat. The building had minimal windows because the darkness enhanced the blacksmith's view of hot metal.
The shop is named for William H. Weir (1853-1934) who apprenticed with Thompson's Carriage Works in London before settling in West McGillivray Township. Weir's horseshoes won many awards at local fairs and some are preserved in the collection at Fanshawe Pioneer Village.
