In 1847 the Guardians of the Thirsk Union bought a plot of land to create a building to house the registers of births, deaths and marriages. The building was erected in 1850 and became the office of the Clerk to the Board of Guardians as well as the Register Office. In 1894 the Rural District Council was form and the clerk to that institution was also housed here.
The plaque reads
“Former Register Office
This building, erected c 1850 served as the office of the local Registrar of Births and Deaths and later as that of the clerk to the Board of Guardians and the Rural District Council”
.
