The mural, which depicts a couple dancing to a three-piece polka band, went up this month on a retaining wall near the northwest intersection of I-35 and Oak Street.

“You can see where it breaks up the wall and the monotony of that brick,” Mayor Tommy Muska said, pointing at the mural on a recent morning. “It gives it a little personality.”

The Texas Department of Transportation is incorporating the art as it expands I-35 to six lanes through the Waco district, which extends from Hillsboro south to Salado.

Murals also are planned in Abbott, Bruceville-Eddy, Troy and Salado as the project progresses, each designed with help from local residents and an eye toward evoking a sense of place, said Jodi Wheatley, a TxDOT spokeswoman.
