Collin McKinney is buried in Van Alstyne Cemetery, on the east side of Van Alstyne. He has an illustrious reputation in this part of Texas.

McKinney was born in New Jersey on April 17, 1766 and fought in the War of 1812. Over the years he moved to Kentucky, then Tennessee and Arkansas. In 1826, he settled in northeast Texas and was a delegate to the Convention of 1836 which called for Texas to declare its independence from Mexico. He was later part of the committee that drafted the Constitution of the Republic of Texas.

He was married twice, and had a total of ten children. Collin County and the City of McKinney were named in his honor. (Information taken from (visit link) ).

Collin McKinney's headstone is a rounded cube with a tall pillar above. This is the gravesite for both he and his second wife Elizabeth (Betsy). There are two bronze medallions at the gravesite documenting McKinney as a Veteran of the War of 1812.

Collin's inscription reads: Collin McKinney Born in New Jersey Apr. 17, 1766, Died Sept. 9, 1861 - He was one of nature's noble men, an ardent patriot and a true Christian.

Betsy's inscription rads: Betsy L. wife of Collin McKinney, Born May 2, 1786, Died Aug. 2, 1862.
