Situated at the entrance to the Tonto Hills housing area of Carefree, Arizona, this concrete sculpture represents the Corn Maiden. Kachinas, most are 18" to 24" tall, are real world representatives of benign spirits. The Corn Maiden Dancer purifies the women who grind corn for ceremonial purposes. The kachina holds the sacred gourd and eagle feathers and at its feet are the important Hopi vegetables, corn, beans, watermelon and squash. They are located at the cardinal compass points. The statue is 39 feet tall. the base sections are solid concrete. The rest is hollow with 6 inch walls. It is owned by the Tonto Hills Volunteer Fire Department.
