The original courts for Thirsk met in the upstairs of the Market Hall. In 1854 the Market Hall burnt down and the courts moved to the Police Station. Eventually the courts moved to a purpose built courthouse on Westgate. The courts were eventually closed in 1995. Following renovation in 2000 the courthouse is now an arts venue run by Rural Arts North Yorkshire
The plaque reads
“The Courthouse
This building was erected in 1885 to house the weekly Magistrate’s Court which last sat here on 4th September 1995.”
