Thirsk was never incorporated as a borough. There were assembly rooms in Victorian times , but never a town hall. In 1910 a company was formed to give Thirsk and Sowerby a club room and a town hall.
Walter Henry Brierley was a York architect of some standing, who was known as the “Lutyens of the North”. He was a leading exponent of architecture incorporating elements of Christopher Wren’s style. He designed over 300 buildings in his 40 year career and was architect for the York diocese.
The plaque reads
“Thirsk and Sowerby Town Hall
Designed by Walter Brierley, Yorkshire Architect, and opened on 16 July 1913, it was an auxiliary hospital in the First World War.”
