Built c 1723 for Ralph Bell, a local landowner, who purchased the Lordship of Thirsk from the Earls of Danby. The mansion probably stands on the site of a medieval manor house. The top storey and side wings of the hall were added in 1774 by the architect John Carr.

The plaque reads

“Thirsk Hall

Home of the Lords of the Manor since 1723. Extended by John Carr York architect in 1774.”
