Ralph Bell bought the lordship of Thirsk in 1723 from James Earl of Derby. The building now the Three Tuns, built in 1698, was believed to be the family dower house for the Bell family. In 1740 the building became a coaching inn.

The plaque reads

“The Three Tuns

Reputedly built as the dower house of the Bell family, Lords of the manor. This became a leading coaching inn. William and Dorothy Wordsworth stayed here in 1802.”
