Stylish, low maintenance, enameled porcelain electric refrigerators, such as the GE Monitor Top started to appear in American kitchens in the 1920's. In 1930, 10% of households had electric refrigerators-- by 1940, 56% did. With a price tag of only $300, these first models were considered “the first affordable refrigeration units” for the average family. Many utility companies offered the GE Monitor Top refrigerator to their customers for as little as $10 a month, simply added to their monthly utility bill. This model is from 1934.
